This course will examine the literary, cultural and social significance of the graphic novel, its initial rise and its rising popularity as a literary medium. Close attention will be paid to the origins of the novel and its relationship with comic book writing. Both mainstream and independent graphic novels will be read and analyzed in the idea of a novel. We will also explore comparative relatonships between the graphic novel and sci-fi, the detective novel, historical fiction and fantasy literature. Authors covered will include Art Spiegelman, Will Eisner, Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis and Brian Vaughn. [11/14/2005]
