This course is a cross-cultural exploration of the lives of children. It examines basic anthropoligical concepts about childhood and especially the issue of how much children in different cultures, societies, and historical periods resemble one another. Ethnographic case material is used to explore the ways in which childhood is culturally constructed. Central to this how to understand and interpret the every day lives of children and the role of children's agency in defining and giving meaning to the life of the child. [12/21/2005]
