This course explores the mathematical content of elementary school mathematics from the perspective of future elementary school teachers. Topics include mathematical thinking, problem solving, sets, representations of functions, numeration, standard and non-standard arithmetic algorithms, mental arithmetic and estimation, number theory, integers, fractions and rational numbers, decimals, and real numbers. Graphing calculators and manipulatives are used throughout the course. This course is required for elementary education majors. Fall.
