This course explores the formative influences that gave rise to rock and pop music. It identifies its major figures, innovators and their contributions, as well the various styles that have developed in its history. The impact of social trends on rock music and the influence of rock music on society both are explored, as well as the role that technology has played in rock's evolution. Finally, other forms of music that have assimilated elements of rock music are identified and examined.
