Advanced study of the materials science aspects of conventional and modified portland cement concrete including (i) the chemistry of cement, (ii) hydration mechanisms, and microstructure modification, and (iii) techniques to characterize cementitious systems. The course will be offered with variable credits. A research project on any one of the above listed broad areas is required in order to take the course for 3 credits. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
