The study of politics concerns who gets what, why, and how in societies. Anthropologists study political systems by examining the varieties of human practices involving rules and laws, persuasion and coercion. This course surveys how politics have been studied by anthropologists for the past 130 years, from indegenous North Americans to Trobiand Islanders and especially how anthropologists increasingly became political themselves as more and more peoples began living under the authority of modern nation states.
