Lecture 3 hours; 3 credits. Prerequisites: CHEM 116N, CHEM 213 or 313 and CHEM 321 or permission of the instructor. An overview of the natural chemical systems operating in Earth?s atmosphere, hydrosphere (natural waters), and terrestrial environment, and the effects that human activities may have on them. Specific topics to be discussed include: origin and evolution of Earth and life, chemistry of the atmosphere (including the ozone layer and greenhouse effect), organic and inorganic components of soil and water, the hydrologic cycle, chemical weathering, chemical speciation and complexation, and micorbial processes in soil and water.
