This course introduces the paralegal's role in the practice of criminal law. Students will examine the critical stages in criminal procedure from arrest through appeal. Students will analyze the substantive aspects of criminal law including the general principles of criminal liability, particular crimes, parties to crimes, and the defenses to crimes. The Constitutional issues involved in criminal law will also be covered. Students will review statutes, rules and significant cases in criminal law and conduct research of various legal issues in order to prepare memorandums and motions in support of their research. Ethical issues involved in criminal law will be explored. Offered fall semester only.
