A survey of the African background, including the emergence of man in Africa, and the rise of the world's first cultures and civilizations; African exploration of the New world; the rise of the Atlantic slave trade and the decline of African culture; the impact of the slave trade on the life of the New World with particular emphasis on the U.S.; the myths surrounding slavery, slave revolts, the Abolition Movement, the coming of the Civil War, and the Reconstruction experiment.
