Description:
-
A broad introduction to Chinese culture and society from an anthropological perspective. Following an overview of geography and history, the course covers a range of topics pertaining to Chinese traditional culture, including marriage, family, education, governance, gender, religion, language, health, art, and music. Relies on cross-cultural comparisons to help locate Chinese culture and customs within a broader worldwide context. Also encourages students to consider the transformation (rather than elimination) of traditional cultural elements as globalization has come to play an increasingly important role in social and economic development.
