MAT 210 - An Introduction to Mathematical Statistics

Institution:
Delaware County Community College
Subject:
Mathematics
Description:
This course is intended as a math elective for engineering science and liberal arts students. It is designed to give students in these disciplines a tool as well as a language in which they can better understand and convey the data they work with. It will employ elementary algebra in deriving measures of central tendency and variability for various discrete probability distributions and will include the study of the following topics: descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, frequency distributions, discrete probability distribution (Bernoulli, binomial, Poisson geometric and hypergeometric) and derivation of their means and variances, central limit theorem, applications of the normal distribution, hypothesis testing, interval and point estimations of population parameters, chi-square test with contingency tables, linear correlation and regression, analysis of variance and application of statistics to various disciplines. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Use statistical measures of central tendency, statistical measure of variability and graphs to analyze and represent the data of a population. Formulate probability distribution for discrete probability experiments. Determine the means, variances and probabilities of discrete probability distributions. Apply the Central Limit Theorem and normal distribution to approximate the probabilities of discrete probability distributions and determine interval estimations of population means. Use hypothesis testing, interval and point estimations associated with the t and normal distributions to make inferences about population parameters. Use the chi-square distribution to test "goodness of fit" and the independence of two variables with associated contingency tables. Determine the regression line and its linear equation that best fits a set of points. Determine confidence and prediction intervals for the regression equation. Determine the linear correlation coefficient between two variables and its relation to linear regression. Use Analysis of Variance to determine equality between populations means.
