This course is a general survey of the earth sciences of geology, meteorology, oceanography, and astronomy in the context of natural hazards and disasters. There is an emphasis on understanding, predicting, avoiding, and preventing these disasters. The course is intended for nonscience majors interested in the earth sciences and how they relate to human activity. Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: Describe how damage from natural disasters can be predicted, avoided, or prevented by good decisionmaking. Explain the theory of Plate Tectonics and its role in describing earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. Discuss the causes of mass wasting, ground collapse, flooding, and beach erosion Apply concepts describing climate and weather to hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and wildfires Describe the threat caused by asteroids. Apply laboratory skills and computer technology to solve problems in a cooperative environment. Prerequisites: ENG 050 and REA 050 4 Credits 3 Weekly Lecture Hours 2 Weekly Laboratory Hours
