  • Southwest Virginia Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a state-wide system of community colleges serving primarily the residents of the counties of Buchanan, Dickenson (partial), Russell and Tazewell. The College operates on the semester system and is open on a year-round basis. Classes normally are held from 8:00 am through 9:50 pm. The availability of college credit courses in the evening allows the student who must work while going to college the opportunity to coordinate college activities with employment.

The SBU Bolivar campus is home to approximately 1,600 outstanding undergraduates and 900 graduate students. Academic offerings include associate’s, bachelor’s master’s. and doctoral degrees in more than 45 academic disciplines including pre-professional programs, business, and nursing as well as liberal arts majors.

We have in place a preferred teach-out agreement with the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts that provides clear pathways and financial equity for most SVC programs. MCLA will launch a special website with details specifically for our students on all aspects of transferring there. For those programs without a direct match, and for students who would like to explore other options, we continue to work with multiple transfer partners, including Norwich University, Castleton University and others, to provide the best possible opportunities for students.
