The purpose of financial aid is to assist students to pursue their college education by helping them and their families meet educational expenses. Never assume that you will not qualify for financial assistance. There are many types of financial aid available to help manage the cost of your education, such as grants, loans, work-study opportunities, and scholarships.

Information for Transfer In Students

  • Accepts Transfers:
    Students no longer enrolled in high school with 24 or more transferable semester hours earned at the time of application can be considered without high school official transcripts and official ACT/SAT scores for general admission.

    We offer degree completion programs for eligible students in Applied Manufacturing Technology, Health Sciences, Fashion Merchandising, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and more!
  • Technical/Vocation Credit Accepted:
    We accept ACE military credit via an official joint service transcript.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Minimum GPA - 2.0. Higher GPA requirements vary by major.
  • Official Transcripts:
    High school transcripts are required if applying with less than 24 credits. College transcript(s) from every institution attended are required.
  • SAT Scores:
    SAT/ACT scores are required for students with less than 24 transferable semester hours earned at the time of application.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Not required for admissions consideration.
  • Essay:
    Not required for admissions consideration.
  • Application Fee:
    $40 nonrefundable fee must be submitted with the application.
  • Associates Degree Required:
    No required for admission. Students that have complete the A.A. the A.S. or approved A.A.T. from an Illinois public community college will transfer to NIU and automatically have junior standing and general education will be considered complete.
  • Other Requirements:
    Some majors have limited admissions and require additional criteria such as higher GPA, specific course work, supplementary documents, and sophomore or junior standing. Early application is strongly recommended.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    In general, A, B, C, and D grades can be transferred, but majors may require higher grades for major course work or prerequisites.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    Minimum credits-24 credits. Maximum credits from a two-year institution - 66 credits plus 4 credits of physical education activity courses. There is no maximum for credits from a four-year institution, but there is residency requirement of 30 hours.
