Houghton College provides an academically challenging, Christ-centered education in the liberal arts and sciences to students from diverse traditions and economic backgrounds and equips them to lead and labor as scholar-servants in a changing world. Located in western New York State, 70 miles from Buffalo and Rochester and 15 minutes south of Letchworth State Park. Students hail from 40 states and Canadian provinces and 32 foreign countries. With 1300 acres and a residential campus, students enjoy a vibrant campus life with many opportunities to take advantage of our outdoor surroundings. Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Transfer students are welcome at Houghton with preference given to individuals who present a gradepoint average of 3.0 or higher.
  • Official Transcripts:
    An official college transcript from each college or university you have attended is required, as well as an official high school transcript if you have not received a college degree (i.e., AA, AS, BA, etc.).
  • SAT Scores:
    SAT or ACT scores are generally not required for transfers.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Houghton requires the submission of a Recommendation Form ideally completed by a pastor, youth leader or other Christian adult. If you do not know anyone in this context, you may substitute a different adult who knows you well.
  • Essay:
    The essay is optional for transfer students but is strongly encouraged.
  • Application Fee:
    There is a $40 nonrefundable application fee. Early applicants (prior to October) and those exhibiting financial hardship may have their fee waived.
  • Interview:
    An interview is recommended but not required. Students with a borderline academic profile may be asked to come for an admission interview.
  • Associates Degree Required:
    An associate's degree (AA or AS) is not required but will waive our Integrative Studies (IS) requirements except for two courses in Christian Faith/Theology.
  • Other Requirements:
    Transfer students are expected to reside initially in college housing, except students commuting from home or those 23 yrs or older. All students are expected to sign a community covenant with behavioral expectations.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    Transfer credit will be given for appropriate courses completed in which a grade of C- or above has been earned.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    Students can transfer a maximum of 67 hours from a community college. You must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours at Houghton and complete at least 50 percent of your major requirements at Houghton.
