Hamilton is a national leader in teaching students to write effectively, learn from each other and think for themselves. Hamilton's 1,350-acre campus is situated on a hilltop overlooking the picturesque village of Clinton, N.Y. The College is eight miles southwest of Utica, 45 minutes east of Syracuse, one hour from the Adirondack Park to the northeast and 90 minutes west of Albany.

    Limited financial aid is available for transfer students and is dependent upon the college's overall budget and financial aid spent on the freshman class. Typically, transfer financial aid is only available to U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Information for Transfer In Students

  • Accepts Transfers:
    Each year we seek to enroll approximately 15-20 transfer students in the fall, and 5-10 transfer students in the spring. Occasionally, we are over or under-subscribed with our freshmen enrollment and will adjust these targets accordingly.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Hamilton does not publish a minimum GPA requirement for transfer admission consideration.
  • Official Transcripts:
    The best predictor of success at Hamilton is your most recent academic work in a college setting. However, the secondary school record of every applicant is reviewed and will be considered.
  • SAT Scores:
    The submission of standardized test scores is required for all applicants.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    A College Instructor Evaluation and a College Official's Report are both required.
  • Essay:
    A personal essay is included on the Common Application.
  • Application Fee:
    There is a $60 non-refundable application fee.
  • Interview:
    While a personal interview is not required, it is strongly recommended. The interview is informative for both the student and the admission committee. We do not offer off-campus interviews for transfer students.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    Credit is awarded only for courses where the grade received is C or higher.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    We require that all students complete a minimum of two years of coursework at Hamilton College, so no more than two years of credit will be transferred.
