Furman University is the oldest, largest and most selective private institution in South Carolina. Founded in 1826, FU's heritage is rooted in the free church Baptist tradition which has always valued particular religious commitments while insisting not only on the freedom of the individual to believe as he or she sees fit but also on respect for a diversity of religion, including non-religious person. The move to the stunning, new campus served as a catalyst for Furman’s ongoing transformation from a primarily regional college to one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the US. Today FU offers programs in 42 subjects and is one of the select chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s most prestigious academic honorary society.
