Designed for non-majors and allied health students. This course provides an application-based approach to human-microbe interactions with an emphasis on disease control, pathogenicity, epidemiology, and the immune response. Topics include prokaryotic cell biology, viral replication, parasitology, and the role of microorganisms in the world around us. A minimum grade of "C" (2.0 or above) must be earned in this course before it can be counted in a biological science major or minor or as a prerequisite for any other biology course. Comprehensive introduction to the microbial world, including cell structure and function, metabolism, genetics, ecology, and interactions with humans and other organisms. Discussions include current research topics and applications of microbiology. Laboratory experience focuses on the microscopy, cultivation, control, and identification of microorganisms. This course is designed for science majors, pre-professional students, and Biology Composite Teaching majors. However, anyone meeting the pre- or co-requisites may take this course. This course consists of 3 one-hour lectures and 1 two-hour laboratory per week.
