  • Scholarships and Financial Aid:
    Financial aid is very occasionally available for transfer students, but is limited by the commitment we make to assist already enrolled and incoming first-year students. All financial aid (including grants and scholarships) is based upon financial need.

  • Accepts Transfers:
    We generally receive between 150-200 transfer applications and admit between 5-20 candidates. We offer a fall transfer program and, in certain years, mid-year admission.

Transfer Application Requirements

  • Minimum GPA:
    Although Bowdoin sets no cut-off guidelines successful candidates usually submit work of honors quality: “B” work or better, or a GPA of no lower than 3.0.
  • Official Transcripts:
    Bowdoin requires both high school and college transcripts for admission.
  • SAT Scores:
    The submission of standardized test scores is optional.
  • Letters of Recommendation:
    A special statement from the dean or advisor of the your current college or university; and two letters of recommendation from current or recent college professors are required.
  • Essay:
    The Common Application Transfer essay as well as the essay described in the Bowdoin Supplement are required.
  • Application Fee:
    There is a $60 application fee for all applicants to Bowdoin College.
  • Interview:
    On-campus interviews with a member of the admissions staff are encouraged for transfer applicants. If you are unable to meet with a member of our staff, in some cases an alumni interview may be possible.
  • Other Requirements:
    Transfer applicants should submit the Common Application, the transfer essay, as well as the Bowdoin Supplement by the March 1 deadline.

Transfer Credit Policy

  • Minimum Grade:
    Bowdoin typically accepts transfer credit for liberal arts courses in which a grade of C or higher has been received.
  • Credits (Min/Max):
    The maximum number of credits that may be transferred are 16. You must complete a minimum of 16 credits at Bowdoin to earn your bachelor's degree.
