Allen University opened its doors in 1870 to provide educational opportunities for newly freed slaves. Our roots are grounded in the belief that men and women who are prepared are better citizens and can make a greater contribution to society. Today, Allen continues its legacy of providing relevant training in a close-knit, nurturing environment that prepares its students for life and careers. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) as a whole have made a tremendous contribution to higher education in producing the majority of African American professionals in our nation's workforce. Many of our faculty and staff share similar experiences and a commitment to providing a sound academic and social environment for students.
